COW
Cows
are domesticated bovine animals. The cow is one of the most common animals in
the world. Cow
supplying about 90% of the dairy needs of the world population.
Cattle
have 32 teeth. Males are known as bulls and adult females that have had a calf are
known as cows. Females under 3 years old are called heifers. A castrated male
is called a steer. A baby cow is called a calf. The terms "bull",
"cow" and "calf" are also used to denote the gender or age
of other large animals including Whales, Hippopotamus, camel, Elk and Elephants. It is estimated that there are 1.3 billion cattle in the
world. Cattle have one stomach with four compartments. Cattle are ruminants,
meaning that they have a digestive system that allows use of otherwise
indigestible foods by regurgitating and re-chewing them as "cud”. The cud
is then re-swallowed and further digested by specialised microorganism. The
smallest cow in the world is a Dexter cow from England standing only 33 inches
(84 cm). A cow produces around 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. A cow
stands up and sits down about 14 times a day. A cow gives milk for the first
time, only after she gives birth to a calf. Cattle can climb up stairs, but
cannot climb down because their knees cannot bend properly. Cattle have an
acute sense of smell and can smell something up to 6 miles away. The ancestor
of domestic cattle are the extinct aurochs
